About this watch

Seiko 5 Automatic Grey Arabic, reference 6309-8900, made in 1970s–80s. Dark grey dial with Eastern Arabic numerals, day-date window with English day wheel. Comes on a stainless steel bracelet (aftermarket). Restored watch: the Seiko case and automatic movement are genuine, and the dial is a refurbished replacement. For everyday wear this makes no difference; it only matters to collectors. Condition grade A – Excellent: minimal wear, runs well within factory spec.

What "Restored" means Many vintage Seikos lost their original dials to humidity over the decades, so replacement dials were fitted. For everyday wear it makes no difference at all: the case and the automatic movement, the parts that keep time, are genuine Seiko. The Seiko 6309-8900

The Seiko 6309-8900 is a Seiko 5 automatic (6309 family, export). It runs on Seiko's calibre 6309, an automatic movement with 17 or 21 jewels, beating 21,600 times an hour. It can't be wound with the crown and winds itself as you wear it, and the seconds hand keeps running while you set the time. Seiko made the 6309 from about 1976 to 1990. Seiko 5s in round, cushion and square cases with colourful sunburst dials. The 6309-7040 Turtle diver uses the same movement.

Is it original? The small dial code at 6 o'clock should start with 6309, like the caseback. If it starts with another number, the dial was made for a different model (a replacement dial). We have seen this reference with dial code 7009-6210 R1.

What is it worth? A running 6309-8900 in average condition usually sells for about €60–130 in Europe; an original dial, a strong colour and the original bracelet push it up. Price guide
