How we grade
- A, Excellent: minimal wear, runs well within factory spec.
- B, Very good: light, honest wear for its age.
- C, Good: clear wear and patina from decades of use. Runs well.
- D, Project: needs service or repair. Priced to match.
The grade describes condition. Originality is shown separately on every watch page, see below.
When a watch has been measured on a timegrapher, its page shows the reading. Rate is how many seconds per day it gains or loses. Amplitude shows the health of the movement, and above 220° is good for a vintage automatic. Beat error under 1 ms is good.
Dials and bracelets, explained
Every watch page has an originality section. Case and movement are genuine Seiko. The dial and the bracelet are listed separately, because those are the two parts that most often changed over the decades.
The dial
- Original: the factory dial, in good condition.
- Original, aged patina: the factory dial, with natural ageing such as faded color, spotting or cream lume. Many collectors look for this.
- Refinished (redial): the dial has been repainted. A good refinish can look great, but it is worth less to collectors, and we price it that way.
- Restored: the genuine Seiko case and automatic movement have a refurbished replacement dial, not the dial this case left the factory with. We check this by comparing the dial code with the caseback reference.
Is a restored watch a bad buy? Not at all, if you want to wear it. The genuine Seiko case and automatic movement are what make the watch reliable, and they are the same as on any other Seiko 5. It looks and works like any vintage Seiko, and it costs less. Dial originality only matters to collectors, which is why we always tell you, on the watch page and in the shop.
Why some dials were refinished: in hot, humid climates, moisture gets under the crystal and stains the dial. For decades, local watchmakers across Asia repainted damaged dials to make watches look new again. So refinished dials are common on vintage Seikos from the region.
How we check: we compare each dial against original references. We look at print sharpness, fonts and logo, the lume plots, and the dial code printed at 6 o'clock, which must match the case reference. If a dial is refinished, the listing says so in plain words, on the watch page and in the shop.
The bracelet or strap
These watches are 20 to 50 years old and were worn every day. The bracelet takes the most wear: links and pins stretch, clasps break, and sweat and tropical humidity corrode steel and rot rubber and leather. Many owners also swapped bracelets for comfort or style, and the original was thrown away. That's why an original bracelet is rare and adds value.
Each listing marks the bracelet or strap as Original Seiko or Aftermarket. A newer strap doesn't change the watch itself.
Classic. Rare. Original.
That is what CRO stands for, and it is also our names: Cezaris and Robertas. Two friends who fell for vintage Seiko, hunting watches in Bangkok and bringing them to collectors in Europe, honestly described and checked by hand.
Seikos from the 1970s to the 2000s are some of the best value watches ever made: tough, accurate, and full of character. We sell two kinds: vintage pieces from the 1970s and 80s, and neo-vintage Seiko 5s from the late 1990s and 2000s (the 7S26 and 7S36 generation), which are tougher, a little larger and great for daily wear. Many of them stayed in Asia. We find them in Thailand and Japan, check every one properly, and bring them to collectors in Europe and the USA.
